Stunning Victorian Home Right Out Of Vogue Living
There's a sense of awe people feel when entering this exquisite residence. The combination and blending of the classic Victorian style with modern sensibilities gives one an instant sense of belonging. You may have been here before, during the Uxbridge Home Tour perhaps, or the Studio Tour. Not a house easily forgotten. There are so many gracious rooms on the main level that we struggled to assign names to them all. The over 9' ceiling height on both levels and the two staircases add to the overall expansive feeling of this extraordinary home.
The kitchen with its exposed brick and stone floor is most definitely the heart of the home. High end kitchen appliances include a 48" stainless steel 6 burner stove & double convection oven with extractor fan above, a 48" side-by-side stainless steel refrigerator & freezer, and a stainless steel Miele dishwasher. The one of a kind custom built Kitchen Island is a work of art onto itself.
The living room is nothing short of a 'great Great Room'!! The gas fireplace is a focal point, as are the glass doors leading out to the bright and relaxing sun room with heated floors and electric wall heaters for an extra boost on cold days. The three rooms to the front of the house are so flexible that anything goes. The largest of these is currently being used as a stately formal dining room, but with its original Victorian fireplace (not working) and stunning bay window overlooking the gardens, it's the ideal place to create an elegant formal living room, music room, or expansive office. The original pocket doors can be closed to separate this large room from the attached smaller space currently being used as a library, and the bright and cheerful family room at the front could easily be converted to an office. The possibilities are endless.
The second floor includes three good size bedrooms and one small cozy bedroom. As well, down the hallway is the sitting room with exposed brick. The washer & dryer are located inside the closet in this sitting area. The 5 piece washroom is still undergoing renovations. The shower will be retiled shortly.
There are two basements to this home. The main basement is down the stairs off of the kitchen area and the crawl space access is in the living room closet next to the access door to the garage, on the floor. Not to be overlooked in this impressive home is the adorable mud room off of the kitchen that also leads to the backyard.
The home continues to surprise and delight outdoors with these stunning symmetrical formal gardens, butterfly garden, gravel courtyard, water feature, and fruit trees including apple, pear, and saskatoon berries.
While this house is on the Uxbridge Register for cultural interest, it is NOT designated with the Ontario Heritage Act.
Framed by an old wrought iron fence and hedging, the home was built by Samuel and Elizabeth Umphrey circa 1875. Samuel was a Director, President, and Manager at the Uxbridge Cabinet Organ Factory where they made seven models of reed organs that were sold to Ontario Churches. The company was in existence from approx 1872 to 1909. Lauded as a well built house with notable gingerbread and fretwork features, the Uxbridge Times Journal Aug 1878 issue described it as 'a very superior brick house' and that anyone intending to build, should study its plans.
