Col. Sam Sharpe's grand Victorian home has retained much of the impressive period details dating back to the 1880's. It has been said that the original wooden front doors, shutters, windows and sills, and most baseboards and trim date back to this time. Have a closer look at the Art Nouveau front door knocker from the 1890's. The classical revival style front porch was added to the home circa 1910. And the sunroom with the beautiful stained glass panels was constructed around 1912.
The Art Deco hanging light fixture in the front hall ceiling is from the 1920's, as are the crystal chandelier in the large dining room and the crystal wall sconces in the living room. With the exception of the kitchen, all rooms in the house have wood floors. The two Victorian fireplaces are located in the living room and master bedroom. You may also notice cast iron floor vents in various patterns throughout the home.
Impactful from the onset are the high ceilings, high baseboards, large rooms, plentiful large windows and multiple exits. The main floor includes the living room, dining room, sun room, family room, kitchen, office, and powder room. Two staircases lead to the second floor where the three bedrooms and two 3-piece washrooms are located. The back staircase was once used to access two servant's bedrooms (now the washrooms) directly from the kitchen.
A Vimy Oak tree, grown from acorns salvaged from Vimy Ridge by a Canadian soldier in WW1, was planted on the north side of the home by the Township of Uxbridge. A plaque is planned for this tree. This house, as with many others on First Ave and neighbouring streets, is listed by The Township of Uxbridge under Non-Designated Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest on the Register of Historic properties of Uxbridge Township but is not designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. The house is eligible for a Heritage Plaque should the new owners be interested in applying for one.
This property was recently divided with a now separate lot 59.3' x 99.57' to the west also listed for sale, MLS #4252845. ESA certificate was completed September 2018. The previous 12 months utilities are: Gas $1660, Hydro $1,722 (this includes the approx $400 used to service the in-ground swimming pool that now is on the severed lot), Water/Sewage $620. At one time, this house was divided into two residences.
Living so close to the downtown core, in the heart of Uxbridge never felt so good. Take some time to stroll through this idyllic neighbourhood lined with unique, distinctive houses and mature trees. Trendy shops and restaurants are just around the corner. Known as the Trail Capital of Canada, the Uxbridge trail systems are always close by. Even the former Trans Canada Trail, now called The Great Trail, winds through Uxbridge and just down the hill from 50 First Ave. It can take you as far west as Vancouver Island and east to Newfoundland.
We welcome you to live here and create your own history.
